About FloodZone.fyi
Fast, free, and accurate flood zone lookups for every US address.
Our Mission
FloodZone.fyi was built to make FEMA flood zone information accessible to everyone â homeowners, renters, home buyers, real estate agents, and insurance shoppers â without navigating confusing government websites.
Flood risk affects millions of American families. We believe that information about your property's flood risk should be a single search away, available on any device, for free.
Our Data Source
All flood zone data on FloodZone.fyi comes directly from FEMA's National Flood Hazard Layer (NFHL) â the official, continuously updated federal database of flood hazard areas across the United States.
The NFHL is the same database used by mortgage lenders, insurance agents, and real estate professionals to determine flood zone designations. It's maintained by FEMA and updated as new flood studies are completed.
We query this data in real time, so you always get the most current available information. Our results are identical to what you'd find on the official FEMA Flood Map Service Center.
How It Works
- 1.You enter a US address or tap the location button on mobile to use GPS.
- 2.We geocode your address to precise latitude and longitude coordinates.
- 3.We query the FEMA NFHL MapServer with those coordinates to find which flood hazard zone polygon contains your location.
- 4.We return your flood zone designation (A, AE, X, VE, etc.) along with risk level, insurance guidance, and base flood elevation if available.
Limitations
FloodZone.fyi provides flood zone information for general informational purposes only. Our results are based on FEMA's digital flood maps, which are the best available national data but have known limitations:
- Maps may not reflect the most recent local flood studies or map revisions.
- FEMA maps don't capture all types of flooding, including urban stormwater flooding and local drainage issues.
- Map accuracy varies by region â some areas have detailed engineering studies, others use broader approximations.
- A property's specific elevation relative to the BFE matters â two houses on the same block may have different insurance rates.
For official flood determinations (required for mortgage closing), lenders use certified flood determination services. For insurance purposes, consult a licensed insurance agent.
