What Is a FEMA Flood Zone?

FEMA assigns every property in the United States a flood zone designation based on its risk of flooding. High-risk zones (A, AE, VE) have a 1% or greater annual chance of flooding and typically require flood insurance for federally backed mortgages. Moderate-risk zones (Zone X shaded) have a 0.2% chance. Low-risk zones (Zone X unshaded) have minimal flood hazard. Learn more about flood zone types โ†’
